Alistair Stevenson

Self-taught furniture maker/designer born in Scotland, 1951.

"When I remember the first piece of furniture I sold in 1981, I still cringe a little, because it surely must have fallen apart due to the construction techniques (the best I could figure out at that time by observation)". However, it was warmly received by the designer store with comments of "this is gorgeous" and promptly sold.

Much has changed over the years, but that first piece launched my woodworking career. In time I opened a cabinet shop "Fine Line Designs" specializing in one off designs and small production runs of furniture, in London, UK. Relocated to Cornwall in 1986 from where my furniture pieces were sold in the UK and internationally.

When I moved to the States I took a sabbatical for a few years and in 2005 returned with new enthusiasm and passion for working in wood, a surprising aspect of which is my discovery of wood sculpture. (Thank you Richard).

These days I prefer to create work in an organic manner often starting with no idea of the end result but allowing the form of the wood and listening to my inner process to guide the way.

With sculpture I have found a channel to express my sense of beauty and fun while challenging my inherent and developed skills.

My furniture reflects simplicity of form and attention to detail.
